This procedure seeks to give the face a more angular and chiseled look by reducing the size of the buccal fat pad normally located in the cheeks. The buccal fat pad, not unlike the appendix or tonsils, has no useful function after infancy. This surgery is recommended primarily for patients with decidedly round, full cheeks and is commonly performed in combination with cheek enhancement.
Buccal fat pad reduction is performed through a small incision inside the cheeks that leaves no visible scar. Dr. Fodor does not recommend total removal because this could lead to a “sunken in” or gaunt appearance. Postoperative swelling and bruising are practically nonexistent. Buccal fat pad reduction results in a more refined, sculpted cheek contour.
You are considered a good candidate for buccal fat removal if the following conditions apply to you:
- You're in good physical health.
- You're in a healthy weight range, with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
- You have a fuller, round-shaped face.
- You're not happy with the fullness of your cheeks.
- You have a condition called pseudoherniation (an inflamed sac in the cheek due to a weak buccal fat pad)
- You don't smoke cigarettes.
- You're looking to have facial feminization surgery done.
- You know how to manage expectations.
However, this procedure isn't for everyone. You may not be a suitable candidate for buccal fat removal if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- You have a narrow face shape. If you've got a naturally thin face, having this particular surgery done might result in sunken cheeks.
- You have progressive hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome). This rare skin disorder causes one side of the patient's skin on the face to shrink.
- You're aged 50 years old and above. You naturally lose face fat as you age. This procedure might emphasize signs of aging.
The final result of buccal fat removal may initially be obscured by the swelling on your face post-procedure. It usually takes a few months for you to see the final results of this surgical procedure, as your cheeks contour gradually to a new appearance. In the end, your cheeks should appear less chubby or full.
To manage expectations, there are some cases wherein the desired results are not achieved with the first procedure. Another surgical procedure may be necessary to achieve the result you're aiming for.
It's absolutely imperative for you to follow the instructions of the surgeon before, during, and after the procedure is performed. Your doctor will give you all the advice you need to help you achieve your desired result.
Having buccal fat removal done costs an average of $2000 to $5000. These factors affect the final price of your surgery:
- The type of anesthesia used
- The surgeon's level of experience
- Prescription medicine for post-procedure care
Buccal fat removal is not covered by health insurance plans since it is a cosmetic procedure.
You can talk to us about the payment structure and plans for this surgical procedure.
Buccal fat removal is performed to remove the face fat in the lower region of a patient's cheek, resulting in a more sculpted facial structure. The procedure takes about an hour and is done under local anesthetic in the procedure room. The lower face's counter is improved or enhanced by removing the fat that cannot be burned through exercise and a regular diet. This surgical procedure gives the patient the appearance of a sharper, higher cheekbone and a more chiseled face.
Preparing for the procedure
Before the surgical procedure is done, your surgeon will discuss your expectations and goals. Your medical history, including the use of vitamins and supplements, will be talked about because they impact the result of the procedure.
Procedure recovery and safety
Before you head home, you'll be given a special mouthwash to prevent possible infection. Your surgeon will explain in detail how you can properly take care of the incision.
In the first few days post-surgery, you'll have to consume liquids exclusively. You will then progress to softer food items before reverting to your regular diet.
Your face may be bruised or swollen after the procedure is done. Both side effects will diminish as your face heals.
You can expect a full recovery in about three weeks. If you have other cosmetic procedures done, this may take longer. Your surgeon can explain further.
It's important that you follow your doctor's post-surgery instructions to the letter. You must attend all follow-up appointments as well.
You can see the final results a few months after the surgery is performed. It takes some time for your cheeks to adapt to its more sculpted shape.
