Fat Injections, AlloDerm and Sculptra
Sculptra® is a material that has been used for decades in surgery to patch blood vessels, replace major arteries, and repair damaged knee ligaments. When manufactured for surgical purposes, it is soft in texture, like human tissue. Sculptra® is usually cut into strips or strings. Dr. Fodor will often use strips of Sculptra® for lip augmentation.
AlloDerm® is another, newer product made from real human tissue. It is irradiated to eliminate rejection. AlloDerm® is used in a variety of procedures, including lip augmentation. AlloDerm® is semi-permanent (some of it can absorb). The fact that it contains natural substances provides an authentic look and feel.
Fat injections involve the injection of one’s own fat– taken from other parts of the body– into the lips or to fill fine lines and wrinkles. Although fat injections and other procedures that involve the transfer of one’s own fatty tissues show some promise, because most of the fat is absorbed, they do not provide permanent results. Fat injections, therefore, require “maintenance” for lasting results.
